IT projects
fail to deliver

According to the Ontario Auditor General … “In
Ontario today, approximately 40
percent [of projects] still fall short in some way” Ontario Special Task Force, July 2005
Companies are also facing increasing complexity in managing external
service providers, Gartner says. “While a single contract with a
single consultant may be easiest to manage, often a single consultant
can't supply all the expertise a company needs for a sizable information
systems project.”

We agree
and so do our clients
In fact that's why Len has been promoting the concept of Project
Health-Checks. We
believe that our clients deserve an objective opinion to assess how well
their projects are tracking. The Office of State Revenue engaged Ashby Bachmann to perform a Stage-one Health-Check on their project to relocate
the State Debt Recovery Office from Parramatta
to Lithgow. The Health-Check resulted in a simple but far-reaching recommendation
which enabled the relocation to occur at the mandated time.
The disciplines of project governance have been well defined
for many years and qualified and accredited project managers abound, yet
the problems continue unabated.

Emerging
issues
The greying population continues to leave the workforce in ever-increasing
numbers. Frequently, a huge amount of corporate knowledge leaves with them.
Ashby Bachmann has explored this knowledge management problem – and the
solutions – in a series of articles published in Image and Data
Management magazine.
IP² = Intellectual Property created and shared through the
Internet Protocol
Many organisations struggle with how to implement the concept of
'knowledge management' (KM). Some are using websites for storage
and retrieval of valuable corporate knowledge, but this has created
new challenges. Organisations still do not know what 'knowledge'
they have, where it resides, who wants it or what it is worth to
them or to their stakeholders. Therefore they are unable to effectively
deliver the Intellectual Property they do possess through the Internet
Protocol.

Mining Knowledge in the Organisation
Accessing knowledge from the minds and experience of the people creating and/or using
it, at the best of times, is usually very difficult but often critical to
business decisions. When they leave – capturing what the domain
expert knows can become an essential requirement for effective knowledge management
in many organisations. Here a few
tips on how to go about it.
